COOKEVILLE – The Coffee County Central High School Lady Raiders are District 6-AAA softball champions after demolishing Cookeville 11-0 in the second game here tonight (Thursday). It is the fourth straight year the Lady Raiders have won the tournament title.
Three CHS teams competed for District 6-AAA championships in Cookeville Thursday night. The CHS baseball and soccer teams fell short of their championship bids.
In softball, the Lady Raiders lost their first game to Cookeville, which was coming out of the loser’s bracket after an earlier loss in the tournament to the Lady Raiders and needed to beat Coffee County twice. In game one, the Lady Cavs pulled out to a 3-0 lead but CHS tied the score in the top of the sixth. Cookeville followed up with its own rally for one run in the sixth and held on for the 4-3 win. Coffee County bounced back and pounded Cookeville in the second game. The second game was a familiar script after earlier in the season when Coffee County followed a close loss to the Lady Cavaliers with a 19-1 whipping. This time a six-run fourth inning and a three-run home run from Anna Spellings powered the way.
In baseball, Cookeville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Raiders tied the score with a two-run third, but the Cavs scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning to regain and keep the lead. Cookeville added three more in the third and two in the sixth to win 9-2. Cookeville is now 32-1-1 for the year.
In soccer the Raiders lost to Cookeville 4-1. CHS trailed 3-0 at the half. The Cavs scored one more in the second half, and Marcello Aguilar followed with the Raiders’ lone goal, on an assist from Cody Howes
As either district tournament champions or runners-up, all three Coffee County teams will move on to region 3-AAA semi final competition next week. Check back here for more information on times, dates, and opponents.
