The Central High School Lady Raiders took a 1-0 lead into the final inning of their sectional softball match against Riverdale, but four unearned runs in the top of the seventh swung the victory to the Lady Warriors, 4-1.
Coffee County scored its lone run in the bottom of the third when Ashlyn Young smacked a single to drive in Anna Spellings from second.
The Lady Warriors challenged in the top of the fourth when they put runners on second and third with only one out. But a big strikeout by Brianna Jones and a rundown between third and home ended the inning with no damage to Coffee County. Jones held off another bases-loaded threat in the sixth by striking out Riverdale’s Carissa Ott to end the inning.
But disaster struck for Coffee County in a three-error seventh with the top of the Riverdale order at the plate. Brooklyn Pendergrast reached first on a throwing error with two outs and was driven home by Kristin Uselten’s RBI double to tie the game. The next two batters walked, and Caylee Porter reached first on an overthrown ball that allowed three runs to score.
A loss in sectional competition ends the season for the Lady Raiders. Riverdale goes on to the state tournament next week in Murfreesboro.
