He’s right of course. Still, it’s hard for me to do, given our current circumstances. Please let me explain.
I was at my mother’s side when she died. From the day we found out she had lung cancer till she drew her last breath was a two-month slide. As her ordeal of surgeries dragged on, every day it became more and more clear that the best possible outcome would not be good. In the final few weeks the picture grew even clearer: my mother was dying. Without a miracle, she simply wouldn’t make it. It was just a matter of when. The night she died, my father held her right hand, I stood on her left, and my wife sat on the bed at my mother’s feet. We watched as Mama struggled more and more to move her diaphragm till finally she let out a breath and never drew another.
At the risk of sounding melodramatic, I’ll go ahead and say it. Today I feel I’m watching freedom die in this country. Every day deeper corruption and contempt for the Constitution is revealed in our federal government, and I’m afraid the American people no longer have the strength of character to stop the slide. Watching my mother die never hurt as bad as seeing the light of liberty slowly dwindle toward darkness in the United States of America.
I hope I’m wrong about our country, but my brother in Christ is exactly right about where Christians’ focus ought to be.
