An Independence Day forecast calling for heavy rains forced the Manchester Recreation Department to move  its Fourth of July fireworks show from Thursday to Saturday.

Manchester Director of Parks and Recreation Bonnie Gamble made the announcement early Wednesday morning, citing an imminent threat of torrential rain Thursday.

“There is a 100 percent chance of rain [Thursday] and an 80 percent chance  of rain Friday, which was our rain date we already had scheduled,” explained Gamble.

The Firecracker 5k and 10k runs scheduled for 7 a.m. Thursday will continue as scheduled. The fireworks show will now be at 9 p.m. Saturday and the live music that was scheduled throughout the evening at Rotary Amphitheater will not be held Thursday.  Whether or not the entertainment will be rescheduled for Saturday is still up in the air.

“We are still waiting to hear back on that,” said Gamble.

The Saturday fireworks will be launched from a field across from the recreation complex at 557 N. Woodland St. Spectators will have a good view of the fireworks from the rec center, Rotary Park, Fred Deadman Park, First National Bank and the Manchester Times at the end of  N. Spring St.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Coffee County that goes into effect at midnight Wednesday until 7 p.m. Friday. The watch is calling for rainfall between two and four inches with localized rainfall reaching up to six inches.

Neighboring Tullahoma also postponed its Independence Day fireworks, air show and concert – only to a much later date of Aug. 31. The Labor Day weekend date was chosen, in part, because it was a date the band, Nashville jazz group Annie and the Hot Club, and the pilots participating in the air show had available.
