Manchester cheese company to expand, add new jobs
Ohio-based MDS Foods, Inc., a manufacturer of cheese products for the retail and food service industries, is currently in the process of building an expanded permanent facility in the Joint Industrial Park on State Highway 55.
The packaging and distribution facility has been located in Coffee County’s Interstate Industrial Park since 2008.
According to Ted Hackney, executive director of the county industrial board, MDS is leasing its current Interstate Park facility but hopes to complete the first phase of a 58,000-square-foot facility in the joint park by the end of this year, weather permitting.
“(MDS) currently has about 41 employees and they’re hoping to add up to 30 more over the next few years,” Hackney said.
“Phase one will have 22,000 square feet of refrigerated space and about 6,000 more of office space.
“Phase two, which will come later, is supposed to add another 30,000 square feet of cooler and distribution space.”
While local company officials were reluctant to verify new employment information without confirmation from their corporate headquarters, plant superintendent Tim Gibbs verified the expansion figures given by Hackney.
“Yes, we’re sort of bursting at the seams where we are now,” Gibbs said.
“Our new facility will be set up and configured a little differently, too, so it will be a lot more functional for our work flow and operating needs.”
According to its website, MDS Foods’ products can be found in supermarkets and restaurants across the United States with brands including Santino, Amish Classics, and Madison Valley Farms.
