Manchester to have music, fireworks tonight after rainy July 4th
Maybe the weather is finally going to be fitting for a Fourth of July celebration – on Friday, Aug. 30.
After rain completely washed out Manchester’s fireworks display and “Red, White and Groove” Independence Day celebration three times last month, local officials picked Labor Day Weekend to reschedule the events. And with temperatures in the 90s all week and rain absent from the forecast it appears as if the timing couldn’t be better.
“We may not have as big of a crowd as we would have had on the fourth,” explained Bonnie Gamble, director of Manchester Parks and Recreation. “But the weather, at least for now, appears to be good and it is Labor Day weekend so it’s a nice, long weekend. We are still hoping for a nice group of people.”
Most of the events and entertainment originally scheduled for July 4 are still on tap for Friday and some additions have even been made.
Music will run from 6-10 p.m. in Rotary Amphitheater with Brian Hester and the Borrowed Band starting at 6 p.m. and The Trails and Aquaducks scheduled to follow. There will be a break from 9-9:20 p.m. during the fireworks show, according to Gamble.
New festivities include a dunking booth with local officials being dunked to benefit Andrew Floied and Ashley Morgan – two young Manchester adults injured in a motorcycle crash earlier this month. Featured on the dunking booth will be Manchester Police Chief Mark Yother, Fire Chief George DeShields and Gamble.
The fireworks will be shot at 9 p.m. from the field across from the Manchester Recreation Center at 557 N. Woodland St. They should be visible from Rotary Park, Fred Deadman Park and the Manchester Times office at 300 N. Spring St.
Labor Day Weekend pool hours
This weekend will also be the final few days for the outdoor pool at the recreation center. The pool will be open from 11 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. Saturday, 1-5:45 p.m. Sunday and 12-5 p.m. Labor Day Monday.
Gamble said the pool will only be used for special events after this weekend until it is closed for the winter.
