A star football player for Coffee County Central High School was arrested Thursday night and charged with possessing eight pounds of marijuana.
He was being held Friday in a juvenile detention center in Bedford County, according to police.
Also charged was an adult male, C.L. Brown, 46, of Goodman Trace, Manchester, who is facing three counts of the manufacture, delivery and sale of controlled substance, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three counts of having drugs in a drug free zone.
According to Manchester Police Department investigator Jonathan Anthony, police had conducted a long-term investigation of marijuana sales that involved several students at Coffee County High School.
“Recently, investigators purchased a large marijuana buy from the football player,” said Anthony. “Those purchases led to a search warrant of the juvenile’s residence.”
Inside the residence, police and sheriff’s deputies found approximately 10 pounds of marijuana as well as numerous weapons, according to the police report with the Manchester Police Department.
Brown, who is a convicted felon, was charged with felony possession of firearms by a felon.
According to Anthony, Brown has charges pending in Arizona for possession of 100 kilos of marijuana to distribute. He also has several other convictions for marijuana possession.
Investigators also allege that Brown had been driving the football player around to sell the marijuana.
Juvenile petitions were obtained against the football player and he was transported to the juvenile detention center in Bedford County where he will remain until a court hearing Tuesday.
“We hold our student athletes to the highest standards,” said CHS principal Joey Vaughn. “Any actions that are detrimental to the team will be dealt with in an appropriate manner.
“At this point we can’t make any further comment regarding the investigation.”
Brown is being held in the Coffee County Jail under a bond of $285,000 and is due in general sessions court Sept.24.
Those taking part in the arrest and search were Anthony, MPD Investigator Stuart Colwell, MPD investigator Jackie Matheny and Chief Mark Yother, along with sheriff’s investigator Sgt. Danny Ferrell. Police seized an estimated $15,000 worth of marijuana and vehicles.
Police are continuing to investigate the case.
