The Golden Eagles scored four touchdowns for a 28-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, and by halftime Rhea County was ahead 48-14. Despite glimpses of excellence at times from the Raiders, the larger and stronger Rhea County line simply dominated Coffee County on both sides of the ball.
The Raiders were hindered on offense by the absence of tailback DeAngelo Rozier, whose size and strength allows him to plow through large, powerful defensive lines like the one Rhea County fielded Friday.
Two of Coffee County’s touchdowns came in the first half: the first on a pass from Peyton Meeker to Chris Vaughn and the second on a keeper by Meeker. Cody Howes shined both as a ball carrier, with a 70-yard run, and as a defensive back with several key tackles early in the game. Coffee County’s final touchdown came in the third period on an 11-yard pass from Meeker to Grayson Miller.
The pummeling at Rhea County was the second dispiriting loss for the Raiders, who fell in their season opener 52-20 to Battle Ground Academy at Manchester.
CHS head coach Lee Davis said the Raiders will be working in the week ahead to improve both the offensive line and the defense for their district opening next Friday at Columbia.
