The Rockets finish the regular season 8-0.
Westwood scored early and led through most of the game. Then, with WMS on top 20-14, the Patriots connected on a long pass with 2:29 to go in the game and made the conversion to put Liberty on top 22-20. They stopped Westwood on the next possession then went on to score another touchdown with 1:39 to go. This time, however, the conversion was no good.
The Rockets began driving down the field in earnest. A key defensive pass interference call put WMS in Liberty’s territory, and a fourth-and-15 conversion run by Austin Harmon lifted Westwood to first and goal on the Patriots’ eight yard line with 55 seconds to go and no time outs remaining. A fumbled snap, however, ate up the clock before Westwood’s Brent Moon ran the ball out of bounds with 7.5 seconds remaining. Zach Vaughn’s third-down pass to Harmon in the end zone was incomplete but left 2.2 seconds remaining on the clock.
On the next play the buzzer sounded as Harmon carried the ball into the end zone to bring the Rockets within two. The two-point run by Vaughn was good to tie the game at 28 and force an overtime.
Westwood took possession in the first overtime with four plays to score from 10 yards out. On first down Chambers carried up the middle for two yards, and then Moon plowed his way to the right corner for a touchdown. Harmon scored two more to put Westwood on top 36-28.
On their turn at a score Liberty took a 5-yard loss on the first play, threw incomplete on second down and fumbled the handoff on third down to put themselves in a fourth-and-28 hole that they were unable to dig out of.
The loss at Manchester dropped Liberty’s record to 7-1. As the top two finishers in the Duck River Valley Conference, Westwood and Liberty will meet again next Thursday at Dyer-Bouldin Field for the DRVC championship game.
