Both the Westwood Middle School Rockets and Lady Rockets dropped their basketball matches at Liberty on Monday
The Rockets’ 36-24 loss at Shelbyville was the first in three games this season. Carlos Medina scored 20 points for the Rockets before leaving the game with a knee injury in the fourth quarter. Austin Harmon added four.
“Although we can never be pleased with a loss there are many positives we can take away from tonight,” said Rockets coach Will Pannell. “Liberty is a very good team, and we played them very tough for four uarters. I feel we did a good job taking care of the ball and rebounding but to beat a team like Liberty we need to continue to improve. Our defense was sound and I am pleased with that, but again there is still lots of room for improvement. Altough we lost, I am very pleased and proud of the effort we put on the floor tonight.”
Medina was scheduled to have an MRI on his knee today, according to Pannell.
“I speak for the entire team when I say we are keeping Carlos in our thoughts as he is looked at by the doctors,” Pannell said. “He is a key part of this team and it would be a very big loss for us if he were to be out for any length of time. Last year Carlos was a DRVC all tourney player and he has already this year established himself very well. He is a leader for us and is a key part to our success. We all wish him a speedy recovery.”
The Lady Rockets lost 38-21 to the Lady Patriots.
The Rockets and Lady Rockets play again Tuesday at Forrest. Boys’ junior varsity plays at 4:30 p.m., the girls play at 6 p.m., and the boys’ game follows at around 7 p.m.
