In a sense, the whole season for the Central High School football squad comes down to who walks away with the Coffee Pot trophy tonight (7 p.m.; radio 1320-AM/107.9-FM) at Carden-Jarrell Field in Manchester

game time

The Raiders, winless in nine games this season, are looking for a win in the most anticipated match of the year—the 88th intra-county contest between the Central High School Red Raiders and the Tullahoma Wildcats. A victory over Tullahoma would not only bring the Coffee Pot to Manchester for the first time since 2007; it would take some of the bitterness away from a losing season. A loss for Tullahoma would also all but end the Wildcats’ playoff aspirations

The Raiders have demonstrated everything they need to win this season—but not consistently and not all in a single game. Tullahoma (4-5, 2-3 district) has also struggled with consistency. The Wildcats enter on a two-game losing skid. The Wildcats lost 28-21 to Lawrence County two weeks ago before falling 20-3 to Lincoln County last week.

The Lincoln County game was damaging to Tullahoma on several levels. Besides losing a second straight district contest, the usually powerful Wildcats’ offense was held to 90 yards, including only 19 in the second half.

What’s more, the two most key players for the Wildcats’ rushing game suffered ankle injuries against the Falcons. Starting quarterback Hunter Myers (#13) is expected to miss tonight’s game. Running back Jonathan Stovall (#6), averaging 7.43 yards per carrying this season on 102 totes, is expected to play against Coffee County, but the condition of his ankle is unclear.

Those two injuries are a severe blow to Tullahoma’s ground game, but the Wildcats still have depth at running back. Senior Star McCallum (#20) is averaging 5.4 yards per carry, and Cole Potter (#5) is close behind at 4.9.

Potter is also the Wildcats’ leading receiver with 354 yards in 28 receptions, and the junior also takes the snap on occasion from a wildcat formation. Other top receivers include juniors Riley Darden (#3) with 341 yards on 17 receptions and Kris Pott-Howard (#7) with 19 catches for 206 yards.

Coffee County continues to show depth at receiver as well. Seniors Chris Vaughn and Cole Hawkins have gained 488 and 349 receiving yards, respectively. They are backed by a platoon of other strong receivers including Boone Riddle (14-193), junior running back Cody Howes (15-140), seniors Grayson Miller (4-47) and John Reece Gilmer (4-42) and freshman Garrett Eldridge (4-24). If CHS quarterback Peyton Meeker can keep the ball on target, the Raiders’ air game should move the ball effectively against Tullahoma.

For rushing, CHS coach Lee Davis continues to use a variety of players to augment the duties of primary ball carriers Howes (65 carries, 290 yards) and fellow junior Dalton Carter (85-211). Last week against Shelbyville Davis repeatedly called on sophomore Gavin Husted to carry the ball, and this season freshman Reece Pratt has also brought his size and speed to bear up the middle.

Since the rivalry began in 1924, Tullahoma has claimed 56 victories to Manchester’s 29. Two games ended in a tie, and the cross-county match was not played for two years during World War 2.

This season the teams are more evenly matched than their respective records might indicate. Whatever the final score, expect a hard-fought and strongly contested match.
