FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK: $1 is such a steal

If it were up to me we would sell the newspaper for $10 a week. Actually, I think it is worth more than that. Stop screaming, your pocketbooks are safe, they don’t let me make those decisions so for now the $10 newspaper will not be explored.

If you buy your newspaper in one of the dozens of rack locations or one of the dozens of dealership locations around town, you probably noticed a price increase in the paper this week. The Manchester Times now sells for $1 instead of 75 cents.

josh petersonI’ll wait on you to stop cussing me now …

Contrary to the rumor mill that is sure to start churning, we aren’t hard up for cash. If we were I’m not sure that extra quarter would keep the lights on. But the value in our newspaper, we feel, is easily worth $1. Think about it, where else are you going to get award-winning, in-depth news, gripping feature stories, award-winning photography and strong editorial page opinions all in one package? Not to mention our award-winning sports section that features anywhere between 50-200 names of your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins and neighbors every week? The answer is – you can’t get that anywhere else.

Where else can you get a community calendar loaded with every event you could possibly need to know about to stay connected with your community, know who was arrested, who bought land next to you, and who started working as a teller at your local bank?

We take a lot of pride in delivering a product that is a steal. We want you to pay $1 and get a product worth so much more. We want you to be able to have your scrapbooks full with birth announcements, your son’s first deer or your daughter’s cheerleading squad.

Some of you are probably still cussing me. Not going to pay $1 a week, you say. Well, our yearly paid subscription rate is not going up. So if you trust us, believe we are worth an investment of $36 a year ($29 with a special rate right now) and will deliver the goods every week then you will get your paper much cheaper than paying $1 every week ($52 a year).

We believe we are worth that investment. We work late nights and long weekends to make sure the news is solid, accurate and something you can count on. The many publishers, editors and writers who have chronicled Manchester before me have worked just as hard bringing you community news and we only hope to continue that and take it to the next level for another 130-plus years. We will continue to invest in you.

Now I think that is worth the investment.
