Raiders upset Shelbyville in opening round of 8-AAA tournament; Lady Raider season ends

The Central High School basketball team had been so close to upsetting the district’s top teams throughout the regular season.  But when it mattered most the Raiders got the win. Friday night in Shelbyville CHS upset the host Eagles 62-56.

Lucas Crismond led CHS with 19 points followed by J.P. Duncan with 17.

Zack Taylor drained a 3-pointer to start the game and after a Crismond drive to the basket the Raiders led 5-0 early. At the end of one quarter CHS led 14-8 but the Eagles started the second hot and took their only lead of the game– 16-14 –with just under six minutes to play in the first half.

Duncan and Crismond went to work and regained the lead for CHS 20-16 with 3:29 to go in the half. The Raiders led 29-23 at the half after a Crismond 3-pointer and a David Keith jumper just before the buzzer.

With just under five minutes to play in the third CHS pushed the lead to 10, 35-25 and kept that margin heading into the fourth. Peyton Talley flushed a 3-pointer with under 1:00 to play in the period to give CHS a 46-36 lead.

With 18 seconds to play in the game Shelbyville cut the Raider lead to three, 59-56, but  Carter and Duncan hit free throws to seal the win.

Lady Raiders fall

Thursday night the Lady Raider season came to an end after a 51-45 loss to Shelbyville.

The Lady Raiders had trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half but took their first lead in the final minute of the fourth.

With 2:32 to play in the game a Lauren Brown 3-pointer gave the Lady Raiders a 45-44 win but the home team held CHS scoreless for the rest of the game.

Brown led CHS with 21 points in the game.
