A Manchester man is being held in the Coffee County Jail under a $50,000 bond after being arrested for child abuse.

Bobby Ray Ledbetter, 43, of Volunteer Avenue, Manchester, was arrested Sunday March 16 for allegedly burning a 4-year-old relative with a cigarette while she was at his residence.

According to a warrant obtained by Coffee County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Ray, Ledbetter is accused of burning the child in three areas on her left arm. The child was treated at Harton Regional Medical Center where nurses told the deputy that they believed the burns had to have been intentional and not accidental.

According to the warrant, the burns appeared to have burned through the sweater at three different areas. The nurses also alleged that it appeared that the cigarettes had been “ground in” the little girl’s left arm.

The arrest warrant alleges that the 4-year-old girl told the deputy that Ledbetter burned her.

Ledbetter told the deputy that the girl “knocked embers” from a cigarette he was smoking onto her sweater and that he knocked the ashes away.

Ledbetter is scheduled to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court March 24.
