Two people were killed and two injured and Interstate 24 was tied up for several hours Saturday night following a three vehicle crash in Manchester.

According to Tennessee Highway Patrolman Donnie Clark, around 6:15 p.m. Saturday a 1992 Nissan Sentra operated by Patrick Rhodes, 35, of Tullahoma was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane when he collided head on at mile marker 114 with a Chevrolet operated by James Golden, 63, of Hixson, Tenn.  Rhodes was then ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Golden was injured and had to be flown to a Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Then a 2006 Infiniti operated by John Richard Rex, 60, of Orlando, Fla., clipped Rhodes’ vehicle and was struck by debris from the Rhodes and Golden vehicles. Rex was not injured in the crash.

One passenger in Golden’s vehicle, Phyllis Golden, 63, was killed in the crash. A second passenger, Katherine Golden, 22, was also injured and had to be flown to Vanderbilt.

Both LifeFlight and AirEvac medical helicopters were called to the crash scene to transport the injured to Vanderbilt.

The crash tied traffic up in the eastbound lane for several hours. The traffic had to be rerouted off of I-24 onto Highway 41 through Manchester.

Coffee County Sheriff’s Deputies and Manchester Police Department assisted troopers at the crash scene as did paramedics from Coffee County Ambulance Service.
