WeCARE VOLs

Local volunteers, staff and school administrators pause for a picture Saturday at the Manchester City School’s WeCARE event held at Westwood Middle School.  Before the event, long-time school administrator Gary Dyer spoke to the volunteers about the inaugural WeCARE, held after a 1994 conference attended by then Vice President Al Gore and President Bill Clinton. “They talked about what communities could do to build families to help give children, as it was called then, ‘a level playing field’.” Linda (Money) Langham brought the ideas back to put together the first WeCARE. Dyer said that the first year was quite a learning experience. “It has evolved into this efficient event that we see now.” He concluded, “This was the very first school district in Tennessee do a WeCARE, and still nobody does it as good.”
