Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday morning on Wattendorf Highway.

According to a report by Tennessee Highway Patrolman Carl Seagroves, around 7:30 a.m. a 1998 Nissan Maxima operated by Evan John Smith, 20, of Louisville, Ky. drifted off Wattendorf Highway and struck a guardrail. The car then crossed the center line into the path of a 1996 Chevrolet pickup operated by James Richard Edwards, 45, of Hillsboro.

According to the trooper’s report, Smith, who was on his way to work for a contractor at AEDC, was flown by Air Evac Lifetam to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where he is undergoing treatment.

Edwards was transported to Medical Center of Manchester for treatment. His children Kristina Edwards, 13, Joseph James Edwards, 10, and James Richard Edwards Jr., 9, were also transported to Medical Center of Manchester where they were treated for their injuries. Their conditions were not made available by the local hospital.

Those attempting to travel Wattendorf Highway toward AEDC were rerouted as both lanes were blocked by the crash.

Troopers Louis Hendricks and Brent McCawley along with AEDC police and Coffee County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted trooper Seagroves.
