Grundy County man dead, Winchester man charged with homicide
A Grundy County man is dead and a Winchester man is being held in the Franklin County Jail following a shooting Wednesday night in downtown Winchester.
Dead is John Franklin Tucker, 46, of Alto; charged with his murder is Gregory Morris Booton, 49, of North Jefferson Street, where the altercation occurred, according to Police Chief Dennis Young.
Chief Young said a verbal altercation between the new men started around 9:30 p.m. in the 200 block of North Jefferson.
After a few words were exchanged, Booton allegedly shot Tucker multiple times, Young said.
The victim was first transported to Southern Tennessee Medical Center and then transferred to Vanderbilt Hospital Medical Center where he died Thursday morning.
Booton was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide. He is being held in the Franklin County Jail under $150,000 bond.
“I commend the patrol officers and the investigators for their work in the handling of this horrific crime and the apprehension of the suspect,” Young said.
The chief also noted that Assistant District Attorney Courtney Lynch provided assistance and guidance in the case.
Police returned to the crime scene Thursday morning drawing diagrams and taking photographs.
