The battle for the coveted Coffee Pot trophy already has enough meaning. But it just got another injection of importance.
With the new district alignments put forth by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA), Coffee County Central is now in District 8-AAA with the Tullahoma Wildcats, giving the rivalry the distinction of a district game. To pile on – it’s the last game of the 2013 season at Carden-Jarrell Field.
Hypothetically, both Tullahoma and Coffee County could enter the Coffee Pot with a playoff berth on the line.
“Should be fun,” said CHS football coach Lee Davis.
CHS athletic director Richard Skipper said the district schedule was drawn.
“That was sheer luck,” he said, “but it worked out pretty good. Both teams could be playing for a playoff berth. That only helps the environment. I remember when it was standing room only with eight to nine thousand for that game and we haven’t had that in a few years.
“It really has a chance to be a Super Bowl with both teams playing for the playoffs.”
In 2013, Coffee County’s district games will be at Columbia, at Lincoln County and at Shelbyville. Home district games will be against Lawrence County, Franklin County and Tullahoma. The Raiders retain old district foe Warren County on the schedule for a week three non-district tilt.
Other non-district games include schedule newcomers Chattanooga Central, Grundy County and Rhea County.
“It’s a much more difficult schedule,” said Davis. “These teams will be well coached and athletic every week.”
Coffee County’s bye week will come week six next fall, sandwiched between a road trip to Grundy County and a home game with Franklin County.
