Brewer named new Manchester Director of Schools

In a 4-1 vote, the Manchester City School Board approved a four-year contract appointing Dr. Keith Brewer as the Director of Schools Monday night.
“I think we got the best [person],” said Chairman of the Board Susan Wood, “someone … who wants to take us forward.”
Board member John Mayberry agreed.
“We got the best person for the job.”
Brewer, a 12-veteran superintendent of the district, returns to the district following lead positions in education.
“I’m glad to be back and glad to work with a good staff and to work with this school board,” Brewer said. “Some of the best years I had were here.”
Brewer said that it is too early to make any definitive plans for the system.
Brewer’s contract will begin July 1. Brewer said that he hopes to sit in when outgoing Director of Schools Dr. Prater Powell and staff discuss the 2012-2013 budget in the spring.
“When July comes I will start evaluating where we are. I don’t expect to come in and make wholesale changes. We’ll take the staff we’ve got and go forward with the students.”
Brewer acknowledged the difficulty the board had about accepting the contract.
“I know it was a hard vote for the board to make, but I was glad to get a 4-1 vote. I would have liked to have a 5-0 and hopefully next time when it’s up for renewal I’ll get that 5-0.”
Mike Lewis was the lone “no” vote.
Brewer’s approval came after dialogue about his salary.
