Brianna Jones gave up only three hits and struck out 11 while contributing a three-run homer in the fifth. Catcher Ashlynn Young had two doubles and three RBIs, and Anna Spellings went 3-for-3 with a triple.
For most of the game Jones dominated the Cumberland County hitters. The Lady Raiders got into trouble in both the fourth and fifth innings, however, as Cumberland County capitalized on fielding errors to put runners in scoring position. But in both cases big strikeouts by Jones and heads-up defensive work by the infield held the Lady Jets scoreless and forced them to strand two runners.
Monday’s match was a dramatic reversal of the two teams’ Apr. 9 meeting at Crossville, a contest that CHS coach Terry Floyd called “the worst game, worst umpiring, and worst loss of my career.” Floyd said Monday’s game was vindication for the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Raiders are now 6-2 in District 6-AAA and 22-7 overall.
In their next context CHS is scheduled to play at Tullahoma Tuesday.
