The Central High School Lady Raiders took advantage of seven fielding errors by Independence to score seven runs on four hits while executing nearly flawless pitching and fielding themselves.
Coffee County jumped out to a six-run lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Ginny Clayborne walked and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bethany Baker, who reached first safely on a throwing error. Catcher Ashlynn Young reached first on a fielder’s choice that advanced Clayborne to third but left Baker out at second. The next two batters, Bricen Hunt and Brianna Jones, hit singles, and Alaina Lusk reached base on a hit batsman. Brittany Williams and Kelsey Adams reached base on the second and third errors of the inning, and Anna Spellings drove in Adams on a single to right field. Spellings was caught stealing to end the six-run drive.
Each team gained one run in the third to make the score 7-1, where it stayed the rest of the game.
Jones started the game in the circle and struck out 10 while walking one in four innings. Hunt struck out six and walked one in three innings of relief. Each pitcher allowed only one hit. Coffee County committed no errors in the field.
The Lady Raiders conclude their regular season Wednesday evening at Smyrna. District play for CHS begins Thursday or Friday in Cookeville.
