Bonnaroo organizers said they were ready to leave the past behind when asked why the music festival decided to book Kanye West as a headliner for the 13th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

But West seemed to have an alternate agenda. West returned to Bonnaroo (only six minutes late this time) Friday night for the first time since the now infamous debacle of 2008, when his late night set was hours late and ended with the sun rising to shed light on a skeleton crowd in a field designed for approximately 80,000.

West used his Friday set to take jabs at the press and reminisced about negative graffiti directed at him on the “porta potties” in 2008. He later compared himself to rock greats and proclaimed to be the “greatest ************ rock star on the planet.”

Later Friday night

A large crowd stayed awake into the early morning hours to watch Skrillex – which included a remix of “Circle of Life,” recognizing Elton John’s hit from Disney’s “The Lion King.” John will close the festival Sunday night.

Nashville’s Jack White will headline the Saturday music card.
