With two choices clearly in front of him, Lance Campbell did what few his age would do – took the path less traveled.

Campbell, a 2010 graduate of Central High School, had the option of taking his football career to a smaller college, and in all likelihood, seeing more instant playing time. Or he could go to Middle Tennessee State University and attempt to walk on, with no guarantees.

He chose the latter.

After making the team and going through two years of mainly scout team work – one year as a redshirt – Campbell has now found his way onto the field and earned a scholarship in the process.

“It’s a great experience,” said Campbell, a 6-foot-3, 310 pound redshirt sophomore. “I’ve been able to move up and I travel with the team now. It’s a lot of fun.

“I had some offers from smaller schools but I decided to try and walk on here.”

Campbell plays right guard on special teams – protecting the place kicker on extra points and field-goal attempts. With MTSU scoring 34 points or more in three of the past four weeks, that means he has been on the field quite a bit.

“It’s pretty simple – just don’t let anyone go by me,” he explained.

Said MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill, “He does a good job for us there.”

Campbell is listed on the depth chart as a right guard. He works there on scout teams during the week and hopes to move up the depth chart to see more playing time in his next couple of years of eligibility.

“Learning all the little things takes some time,” Campbell said.

Stockstill has taken notice of Campbell’s efforts. He decided to give him a scholarship this year.

“I’m glad that Lance is a part of this team,” said Stockstill. “He has a great attitude and he works hard at everything he does.

“He’s got two years left, so if he continues to work hard and continues to improve then he has a chance to possibly help us down the road.”
