Edward Allen, retired newspaper editor, dies

Edward W. “Ed” Allen, of Manchester, a retired newspaper editor, passed away on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, at Unity Medical Center. He was 88 years old.

Allen, who was known by many as “Mr. Ed,” was a former sports editor and photographer of The Tullahoma News, a former editor of the Manchester Times and earlier in his long career was editor of the Shelbyville Times-Gazette.

Active in church and civic affairs in the Manchester area, he was a member of the Manchester Church of God, the Toast Masters Club, Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club, director of the Youth for Christ organization and was the author of a book about his career as a journalist and as a well-known gospel radio personality. He had also worked for the Gospel Music Association in Nashville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Coffee County Funeral Chapel in Manchester with Rev. David Petty and Timothy Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. prior to the service. The online guest book is at the website

A native of Lansing, Michigan, Mr. Allen was the son of the late Lewis and Cora Allen.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Ada Grace Allen; son, James D. Allen; brothers, Sherwood Allen and Truman Allen; sister, Lucille Tugan, and grandchildren, Kenneth Allen, Alisa Luckadoo and Robert Golden.

Survivors include his son, Wayne Allen (Sandra); daughters, Rickie Luckadoo (Gene) and Lola Golden (Gary); daughter-in-law, April Allen; brother, Eldon Allen; 23 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great- grandchildren.
