GROUND BREAKING: New middle school is under construction

Ground was broken Monday on the final big piece of the Coffee County Schools building program.

Elected officials, school officials, teachers and even some students were on hand Monday morning to break ground on a new Coffee County Middle School on State Route 53 – located across from Green’s Bestway. (Click here to watch video of the ceremony)

“I want to say a special thanks to Dane Colwell and his mother Avice [Colwell] who were so gracious,” said Director of Coffee County Schools Dr. LaDonna McFall, speaking about the former owners of the land who sold the 40 acres to the school system.

“I ask how long this goes back and I get various answers – 10 years, seven years, eight years,” said McFall. “The whole building project, I think, has taken some twists and turns but it has led us to where we are today. It’s a very exciting time for our county and our school system.”

The construction of the middle school is the final big piece of the $45 million building program puzzle, which started with a major renovation to Hillsboro Elementary School and the construction of Deerfield Elementary.

If all goes according to plan the school, slated to cost approximately $24 million, will be ready to open for the 2014-2015 school year, which would put current sixth graders in the new building for their eighth grade year.

“The goal is that they turn it over to us in July [of 2014] so we can get certificate of occupancy and get everyone in there,” explained McFall…
