Manchester School Board delays nominating new member

The Manchester City School Board Monday postponed a vote to nominate the late school board member John Mayberry’s replacement until the board could discuss the position with his wife, Veeda Mayberry.


john coffelt byline“I would like to have the time to contact her before we make a decision,” said board chairman Susan Wood during the meeting. “It was sort of a consensus that we would like to contact Mrs. Mayberry, but she has been unavailable.”


Wood advised the board that it has 120 days from the time of a board member’s death to submit a nomination for his or her replacement to the City of Manchester Board of Mayor and Alderman for final approval.


Mayberry passed away July 7 at United Regional Medical Center. He was a 30-year member of the Manchester City School Board of Education.


According to board policy, vacancies that arise due to death, resignation or through due processes “shall be filled by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen in the same manner as a vacancy on that Board. Such appointment shall continue until the next regular election.”


The board will likely make a nomination during the regular September meeting…
