MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Coffee County hoops teams split at Rockvale; Forrest sweeps Westwood

The Coffee County Middle School basketball teams hit the road on Monday night for their first tournament of the season, the Rockvale Tournament at Rockvale Middle School.

The Lady Raiders opened with a 30-21 win over Rockwood.

Kiya Ferrell’s 17-point outing helped CCMS (2-0 overall) extend its lead out to nine points at the start of the fourth quarter after taking a two-point lead at halftime.

Ferrell scored 10 of those in the first half to the lead the Lady Raiders, while Alyssa McClanahan finished the game with five points of her own.

The Lady Raiders will return to Rockvale on Thursday for round two.

Christiana 40, Red Raiders 28

Christiana got the best of Coffee County’s boys basketball team in the opening round of the Rockvale Tournament, defeating the Red Raiders by a score of 40-28.

Connor Shemwell led the team in scoring with seven points, while Aiden Abellana and Ethan Baker finished the game with six and four points respectively for the Red Raiders (0-2 overall), who will return to Rockvale on Thursday to face the loser of Rockvale and Walter J. Baird.

Westwood suffers back-to-back losses at Forrest

Westwood Middle School girls found itself on the wrong side of a win by the Lady Rockets basketball team.

The Forrest Lady Rockets defeated the visiting Westwood Lady Rockets 35-31 on Monday  in Chapel Hill.

Kasen Holt and Elizabeth Brown scored 13 and nine points respectively for Westwood on a night when Forrest held on tight to an 18-15 lead at halftime.

FMS outscored Westwood (3-3 overall) 17-16 in the second half, as the Westwood struggled to cut into the home team Lady Rockets’ lead.

Alex Davenport was the other double-digit scorer, finishing the game with 10 points for Forrest, while Ryan Lewis and Megan Mealer scored seven points each.

Forrest 35, Rockets 31

The Westwood Rockets’ basketball suffered the same fate as the Lady Rockets, falling to Forrest by a matching score of 35-31.

The loss to Forrest ended what was a four game winning streak for Westwood (4-2 overall).

Westwood had a chance to tie the game in regulation, facing a 33-31 deficit with 31 seconds left, but was instead forced to send Forrest to the free throw line to extend the game.

Forrest took a narrow 15-14 lead at halftime, but Westwood surged ahead by one point headed into the fourth quarter. It was there that Forrest outscored WMS 11-6 on its way to ending the Rockets’ impressive winning streak.
