A Cowan man identified as Corey Matthews, 26, of Tennessee Avenue, was found beaten and slain in a cornfield Sunday afternoon, according to Franklin County authorities.
Franklin County Sheriff Tim Fuller said Tuesday morning that investigators have questioned a number of individuals, including several Coffee County residents.
The murder is one of several recent cases which remain unsolved in the area as of Tuesday.
The cause of Matthews’ death was reported as “blunt force trauma” by the state medical examiner’s office, where the body was sent for autopsy.
Cowan Police Officer Mike Holmes, who began searching for Matthews after his family had reported him missing since Saturday night, said as he drove around he spotted the body in an open cornfield on Slag Town Road near Jackson Cemetery in Cowan.
Investigators from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and two agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation converged at the scene and collected evidence.
Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves noted that his officers have “gone with the Franklin County investigators” to question several possible suspects.
“I feel very positive that we are heading in the right direction in this investigation,” Fuller said, but he declined further comment on what connection the suspects had with Matthews.
Fuller asked that anyone with information about the murder should contact his department at 931-962-0123.
