Despite a halftime tie, the Westwood Middle School Rockets held Forest Middle scoreless in the third period on their way to a 45-33 victory at Chapel Hill on Thursday night.

The Rockets went man-to-man during the third period, shutting down Forest’s offense, with Rod Brinkley leading in scoring as he netted five points in Westwood’s nine-point period.

Brinkley led the game in scoring with 19 points. Jake Hollandsworth was close behind as he scored 12 points for Westwood, 10 in the first half.

Westwood outscored Forest four to three in the fourth period, while Coach Will Pannell emptied the bench, giving every Rocket time on the court.

For the Lady Rockets, a 14-point first quarter gave Westwood a lead that Forest Middle could not recover from, as Westwood won 32-24.

The Lady Rockets high-pressure defense held Forest scoreless in the fourth period as Valarie Barger sank a field goal with Ashley Starks scoring two points from the charity stripe and Karen Medina scoring another point.

Medina led the Lady Rockets on the scoreboard as she dropped three 3-pointers in the first half, finishing the game with 10 points. Starks added another eight points, and both Beatris Barrera and Barger scored six points on the night.
