The residents of Horizon Health and Rehab were in for a treat Thursday, literally, when the staff organized a dessert contest in celebration of National Nursing Home Week.
“Today is chef’s day,” said Horizon administrator Carol Wilburn during the contest’s commencement. “Our staff and family members baked their famous pies, cakes and desserts.”
Wilburn said that the residents were exited about the food and wanted to do some baking.
“This was a way to get people to participate.”
Judging the contest were Chef Michael Osborne of the Manchester-Coffee County Conference Center, Sharon Holmes of the Health Nut and volunteer Loretta Toliver of Women’s Hospital Auxiliary.
The top prize was awarded to Carol Brown, whose husband, Edward, is a resident at Horizon. She baked a coconut cream pie, a trusted personal recipe.
“Congratulations, that was an excellent coconut cream pie, thank you,” Osborne told a reserved Brown, face brightened with a quiet smile.
Brown’s win came in against some pretty tough contenders.
Horizon Director of Nursing Penny Smithson took second place with an heirloom chess pie recipe that comes from the late Lizzie Word of the Fountain Grove community in east Coffee County.
“The recipe is over a hundred years old,” Smithson said.
Third place went to volunteer Marjorie Anderson’s no-bake chocolate cookies with cranberries.
“I am the third-place cook in the state of Tennessee,” Anderson said in reference to her wins with dairy food at the county, district and state levels of FCE.
The contest was conducted by blind tasting, with entries judged on appearance, overall taste and correctness and texture.
“Through those three categories we [were] able to determine the winner,” Osborne said.
The week’s other festivities included a daily theme in which staff dressed in poodle skirts for fifties day and brought in ducks and chicks for farmers day.
The Women’s Auxiliary fixed residents’ hair and makeup for glamour day on Wednesday, Wilburn said.
