The Lady Raider softball team began play in the Lady Warrior Southern Classic Thursday afternoon at CHS. The team went 2-1 on the day, defeating Vestavia Hills Ala. and Kenwood while dropping a game to Marion County.
Brianna Jones tossed a one-hitter against Vestavia Hills, striking out 13 in the 3-0 win. Jones, Bethany Baker and Rhinna Roberson all had hits in the game.
“Brianna pitched a great game,” said head coach Terry Floyd. “We didn’t hit as well as we could have but the way Brianna pitched we didn’t have to.”
The Lady Raiders lost game two of the day 10-5 to Marion County. Baker took the loss while freshman Kaylee Skipper pitched two innings in relief.
Jones blasted a two-run homer in the third inning to cut into the Marion County lead but the Lady Raiders couldn’t generate enough offense for the comeback.
“We didn’t hit the ball well and we had some errors on defense, that is never a winning combination,” said Floyd.
The team bounced back in game three, beating Kenwood high school 3-1.
Jones got the win, pitching seven complete while striking out 15.
Baker and Anna Spelling each hit home runs in the game for the Lady Raiders.
The Red Raider baseball team fell 17-5 to state powerhouse Houston Thursday night at Powers Field.
The Raiders out-hit Houston 10-9 but committed seven errors in the game.
Houston built an 8-0 lead through the first two innings before CHS plated five runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to three.
Hunter Smithson led CHS with three hits in the game while John Reese Gilmer and Hudson Rollman each had two.
The Red Raider soccer team opened District 8-AAA play with a 1-0 win over visiting Lincoln County Thursday night at Carden-Jarrell Field.
Abelene Barrera scored the only goald of the game in the 12th minute.
It was the third straight win for the Raiders who will play a make-up game at home against Franklin County on Monday before traveing to Tullahoma on Thursday.
The Rocket baseball team played its first home game of the season Thursday aftenoon, falling to Fayetteville City 14-3. Carlos Medina was the starting pitcher for the Rockets. Overall Westwood allowed eight hits and walked 15 Tiger batters. The Rockets had just three hits in the game with Medina, Jacob Johnston and Jonathan Sherrill each singling in the game.
The Lady Rocket softball team run-ruled Huntland 13-3 Thursday afternoon at Lady Rocket Field.
Raven Rogers earned the win, giving up just three hits while striking out eight. The win improved Westwood’s record to 8-2 on the season.
The CHS tennis team lost to Lincoln County Thursday afternoon at Fred Deadman park. The Raiders lost 6-1 whith Matt Johnson and Kyle Johnson earning the only win for the boys team in doubles play.
The girls lost to the Lady Falcons 4-3. Maddie Taylor and Kristen Shelton earned singles wins for CHS while Taylor and Alex Crossland earned a win in doubles play.
Westwood soccer lost to Harris 3-1.
CCMS baseball split with North Franklin County, winning 11-3 in game two while dropping game one 6-3.
