The Westwood Middle School Rockets and Lady Rockets opened their basketball seasons Monday with one win and one loss at Community Middle School in Unionville. The Lady Rockets lost 45-13, but the boys won 44-36.
Carlos Medina was top scorer for the Rockets with 20 points. He was followed by Austin Harmon (10), Zach Vaughn (9) and DeShawn Gates (4).
“We started slow and were down early,” said Westwood coach Will Pannell. “The boys did a wonderful job playing as a team and continued to play fast and physical and were able to regain the lead before half. In the second half we ran into a little foul trouble. We had guys step up and make a big difference off the bench. I am very pleased with this win over a good Community team. It was a team effort, and the boys can be proud of this hard fought win.”
The boys’ junior varsity also played Monday and lost 48-34 to the Community JV. Westwood’s Jake Hollandsworth led all scorers in that match with 14 points.
Westwood’s next games are Thursday at home against Moore County. Girls play at six and boys at seven. JV plays at 4:30.
