Straight line wind causes damage in Coffee County

Straight line wind caused damage in the Rutledge Falls area about 5:20 p.m., May 3. Power lines and communication lines were down, according to local resident David Welborn.

Welborn (pictured) and his wife, Emily, cleared one lane.

"Help has been summoned from the Coffee County Highway Department," Welborn said. "There was an onslaught of visitors to Rutledge Falls trying to exit the area.

"No one was injured on the road. It is not known about the houses in the area."

A severe thunderstorm with damaging wind gusts has left more than 12,000 members across DREMC’s service area without power, according to DREMC.

Poles and electric lines have been reported down across the area. Crews are currently assessing the damage, but the storm and high winds continue to sweep through the area, according to DREMC.
