This month’s insider features Misti Garrett a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Krav Maga coach, co-owner of TWMA as well as Manager/co-owner of Snap Fitness.
In classes I quote Jocko Willink—a lot. He often points out that we do not lack motivation, time, or money to accomplish our goals. We lack discipline. Discipline, he says, equals freedom. Dictionary.com defines discipline as an activity, exercise, or a regimen that develops or improves a skill. Essentially, it is the development of habits or practice. For example, when people first train in Jiu-Jitsu, they are not able to just throw their legs around someone’s neck and choke them out the first time they are introduced to triangle choke--I’d be out of a job if they could! They must first be taught WHY they would ever need to do that, and then they must be taught the steps to make it happen. Even then, they do not become fluid with it under pressure unless they have PRACTICED those movements so many times they no longer have to think about them. It’s the same concept for your health. You cannot get healthier without significant effort initially. But after a while, that one decision to suck it up and just do it snowballs into other decisions, and before you know it, you have a whole new set of healthy habits that you no longer need to think about, because it’s just what you do. BAAM! You just got yourself some freedom. Freedom from worrying about your health, freedom from wishing you could play with your kids (if you could only get up and down from the floor easier), and freedom from low self esteem because you are making progress. Your only real problem is you may not know where to begin.
