A Coffee County woman and her son were heading to a family dinner in Murfreesboro on Sunday, Nov. 25 when their car was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle.

Evelyn Keith Barton, 88, of Normandy, died the following Monday from her injuries. Her son, Richard Barton, was not injured. She was the passenger in the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado and Richard was the driver.

“She was a kind, loving woman with a beautiful smile. She was the mother in law every girl hopes for,” said daughter-in-law Mary Jane Barton.

The pair were travelling on U.S. 41A South, according to the police report. The accident occurred at the Normandy Road intersection at 1:08 p.m.

The offending driver, Lynn L. Bell, 74, of Manchester, allegedly turned into the path of Barton’s truck and struck it head on. He was driving 2009 Ford Escape. Police issued him a citation for failure to yield. Bell was injured in the accident.

Funeral services for Evelyn Barton were Thursday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Laurie Raulston officiating.
