A day of rain didn’t diminish Manchester City Schools annual English Language Learners (ELL) Family Night on Aug. 20 at the Manchester Rec. Center
This kick-off event introduced families of English Learners to opportunities offered to parents and students by the school system, including parent English classes and after-school English programs for students.
Despite the earlier rain, the weather clear about 5 p.m. and about 120 English learners and their families came to enjoy swimming in the outdoor pool area, where pizza was served and parents could connect with teachers and other families. Along with use of the outdoor pool and play equipment, the Rec Center provided several life guards to ensure the safety of the group.
“I was grateful to be able to meet and visit with our students’ parents and to see the warm, caring interactions as children played together in the water. I was touched by how welcoming and responsive the parents were to me as a new teacher to WES,” commented Jennifer Raulston, the first bilingual (Spanish/English) ESL teacher in Manchester City Schools.
Raulston has spent many hours helping parents understand the process of starting a new school year with their children, and she is a welcome addition to the district’s ESL teaching staff.
