Former Westwood Middle School Rocket, now a graphic designer for Lakeway Publishing, Michelle Davis is the backdrop artist for the WMS 2020 show, “Anne of Green Gables, A New Musical.”
“I asked Michelle to sign the backdrop this year. Her painting will be showcased during the run of the school musical February 20-22. It will also serve as the backdrop for music concerts and other assemblies in our gymnasium. Michelle spent the better part of four days working on the backdrop,” said Speech and Theater teacher Karen Lewis.
When asked why she keeps returning, Michelle said, "I want to give back to my alma mater and its theatre program."
Davis performed in Westwood's plays all three years she was a student there. In 2012 she followed theatre teacher Karen Lewis to the Arts Center of Cannon County to perform in Peter Pan. In 2014 she was assistant choreographer for Westwood's “Cinderella,” and in 2015 starred as the female lead for Teen Actors' Guild “You Can't Take It with You,” again directed by Mrs. Lewis.
In 2016 Michelle and her mother helped with scenic art for Westwood Middle's “Seussical, Jr.” They returned in 2017 and did the background for “Annie, Jr.” In 2018 Michelle took the lead on the backdrop for Once On This Island, Jr., and now she is the solo artist for this year's show, “Anne of Green Gables, A New Musical.”
The 32' wide x 16' high backdrop is the largest "canvas" Michelle has painted. When asked why she keeps returning, Michelle said, "I want to give back to my alma mater and its theatre program."
Lewis added that Davis did her first WMS play at WMS 10 years ago.
“She did her first ever show with me in 2004 for (Millennium Repertory Company),” Lewis recalled.
