‘Marching over this obstacle’

While COVID-19 outbreak has impacted every individual and organization, local businesses try to find safe ways to continue offering valuable services and to ensure their workers receive much needed paychecks. Tracy St. John, owner of Jiffy Burger, said she would do anything in her power to make sure her employees can provide for their families.

The COVID-19 outbreak has impacted every individual and organization, and local businesses try to find safe ways to offer valuable services and to ensure their workers continue to receive much needed paychecks.

Tracy St. John, owner of Jiffy Burger, said she would do anything she can to make sure her employees can provide for their families.

“The COVID -19 has definitely impacted how we operate at the Jiffy Burger,” St. John said.  “We are operating on our normal schedule; however, we are carry out and curb service only.”

St. John reassured her staff they will face the challenges together.

“Monday, I spoke with our employees,” St. John said. “Many of them were scared that they would be laid off and expressed the concerns they would have financially should we close. We assured them that as long as they wanted to work, we would stay open. We also told them not to worry because we would pay everyone their usual check.”

‘A time for bonding’

Jiffy Burger’s owners and staff plan to turn the challenge into an opportunity.

“A couple of weeks of hardships would instead become a time of bonding and working together,” she said. “We have all seen the images of empty grocery store shelves and the images of people hoarding necessities and it is scary. Those images alone are enough to cause fear in anyone. However over the last week, I have been wittiness to just the opposite.”

St. John has seen the generosity and support of the community.

“We have had customers bring us donuts and treats and send us well wishes,” she said. “I have seen customers picking up their orders and leaving unusually large tips out of pure kindness. I have had more customers than I can count - thank us for staying open so they will have a place to eat. We have in return donated food and supplies in return to pay it forward.”

‘Friends and family’

The Jiffy Burger is “more than just a restaurant,” St. John said.

“It's a little community inside the community where they rely on us as much as we rely on them,” she said. “Our customers and employees are actually our friends and family.

“Working together and helping each other is the only way to get through such a hard and scary time. We have been blessed to have the support of so many wonderful people during all of the chaos. The Jiffy Burger family is going to march over this obstacle and look forward to seeing and hugging – I am a hugger – everyone on the other side soon. We can't wait to open our doors again and let everyone inside. Again, don't worry, our employees will continue to work and you will see all of their familiar faces again soon. We appreciate everyone and are grateful for all of the community support.”
