Ransomware attack has hit Coffee County Sheriff's Department, crippling its computer system, Channel 5 reported first.
Coffee County Sheriff Chad Partin has confirmed.
"Our system got a virus," Partin said.
Currently, cyber experts with the TBI and state Homeland Security are trying to break the code.
Employees at the jail noticed electronic files being moved, Channel 5 reported.
Then the entire system locked up this morning. Not long after that, a message was sent demanding payment to unlock all the files. The documents include files and arrest, booking and sentencing records for all inmates. There's a danger that these files could be altered. There are paper back-ups, according to the sheriff's department.
