A 62-year-old male drowned on Normandy Lake Thursday.
The victim’s name is Thomas R. Spelce, according to Kerry Farrar, investigator at the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department.
Spelce was from Hazel Green, Alabama.
The incident happened around noon, and the body was found around 10 p.m. on Thursday.
“At this point, it just seems as an accidental drowning,” Farrar said.
Spelce was on the lake with a group of friends. They had three boats.
“There were several people that witnessed this – all of them are friends,” Farrar said.
“He just jumped out of the boat without a life vest on – I guess just to cool off, get in the water,” Farrar said. “He just didn’t make it back to the boat.”
The water was approximately 30 feet deep in the area, said Farrar.
“We’ll send him for an autopsy,” he said. “It could have been a heart attack. He wasn’t able to make it back to the boat before he went under.”
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and the Coffee County Rescue Squad responded to the call and recovered the body.
