Coffee County Mayor Gary Cordell is recovering from an open heart surgery he underwent last Monday, May 20.
Cordell is recovering at his home and he feels better with each day, he said. He expects to return to his office in “several weeks.”
In the meantime, Commissioner Jackie Duncan will serve as a pro-tem chairman at the Coffee County Commission meetings.
The next two meetings of the commission are set for June 11 and June 25, according to Roxanne Patton, executive administrative assistant for the mayor’s office. The upcoming meetings have extra emphasis, considering June 30 is the end of the county’s fiscal year and the upcoming year’s fiscal budget is being planned.
“I wish him a speedy recovery,” Patton said. “He doesn’t have to worry about anything at the office because we’ve got it covered.”
Coffee County Sheriff Chad Partin is also keeping Cordell in his thoughts and prayers.
“The mayor was calling me before he went into surgery and after he got out,” Partin said. “He has been worried about jail pay. We told him to take care of himself and rest. We all pray for him to have a full recovery and thank him for working with the sheriff’s department.”
Michael Bonner, chief of Coffee County Emergency Medical Services, also wished Cordell a quick recovery.
“Mayor Cordell is a strong supporter of public safety and a true friend of EMS and myself,” Bonner said. “He is in my thoughts and prayers for a quick and full recovery.”
Commissioner Ashley Kraft expressed her support, as well.
“Mayor Cordell is a strong man and I wish him the best of luck in healing and recovery,” Kraft said. “His health, strength, and perseverance are in my prayers every night.”
