Hickerson students collect for K-9 vest

The students at Hickerson Elementary School recently collected money to help outfit a Coffee County Sheriff’s Department K-9 with some much-needed equipment.

Thanks to the initiative – dubbed Pennies for Emi – Emi now has a cooling vest.

“For about a month, students brought pocket change,” said Jason Dendy, Coffee County deputy – SRO. “And we got buckets of change. So I took it to the bank to turn into cash.”

Hickerson Elementary School history teacher Randa Prater came up with the idea for the project, said Dendy.

Fourth and fifth grades did a community service project as a schoolwide fundraiser, according to Prater.

“(Students) brought in change, and the winning classroom got a party of their choice,” Prater said. “We got Emi a cooling vest since she already had a bulletproof vest to help cool her on hot days.”
