Coffee County deputies responded last month, Jan. 24, to an 11-year-old child bitten by a dog.
While all animal attacks are tragic, Tennessee has the 9th lowest average insurance payout for dog bites in the nation at $32,426 per claim in 2018 with 293 dog bites, according to Quote Wizard.
According to the source, pit bulls were responsible for the highest percentage of reported bites across all breeds (22.5%), followed by mixed breeds (21.2%), and German shepherds (17.8%).
They found that when pit bulls were involved these claims have the highest average damage per bite.
About one in five attacks nationally are serious enough to need medical attention.
