EMS director: two more ambulances, Hillsboro station needed

A father and his 7-year-old son were riding a dirt bike together in a yard in Hillsboro on Saturday, June 15 around 2:30 p.m., according to Coffee County Sheriff Department Captain Frank Watkins.

The father drove the bike between two trees and did not notice a strand of barbed wire wrapped between them.

“When he hit the barbed wire, it caught the child in the neck. The father felt that and noticed that,” Watkins said.

Authorities identified the child as Desal Reek.

The father attempted first aid and wrapped Desal’s neck with his own shirt before rushing him to Unity Medical Center. He called emergency services while he was in route.

Desal died in the hospital, Watkins said.

No foul play is suspected.
