CHS Baseball held tryouts for the 2021 season on June 1. The team was one of many that had the season abruptly ended by the COVID-19 pandemic and is eager to make up for lost time.
“It was great to be able to see all the players go out there and have some fun and compete,” Coach David Martin said. “It was really great for all of us. Me and the coaching staff had really missed being out here and we were glad to have such a great day for tryouts. We were also fortunate that we were able to fit everyone in on one day safely which made the tryout process a bit more streamlined.”
“We lost seven seniors last year,” Martin said. “There is a large group of freshmen that have tried out this year to help fill those slots. In total we had about 30 students tryout, and all of them were great baseball players. It makes the selection process very difficult and we end up having to cut some fantastic players. I always tell them though that I was cut during my playing time and I used it as motivation to improve my craft before I got my chance to be on the team. Sometimes that’s what it takes, and every year we tell the guys that they are encouraged to try again next year. Even so, it’s hard to tell them they didn’t make the team.”
“We do have six returning seniors,” Martin said. “They don’t need much motivation to put in work, but having their season shortened last year definitely gave them a bit more of an edge this year. You can definitely tell they are ready for the season to get started.”
