Many sporting events have been sidelined since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March. Baseball, soccer, softball, track all of the spring sports were cancelled, so many parents and athletes were concerned that the same fate would befall the fall sports.
As of now that appears to not be the case as the TSSAA has decided to allow fall sports under certain conditions. A pre-participation physical must be filed with the school office prior to a student-athlete participating in an official day of practice. Physicals performed on or after April 15, 2020 meet the requirement for the 2020-21 school year. A COVID-19 questionnaire is provided on the website and the coaches are recommended to issue it to any athlete. The practice guidelines below are meant to supplement the existing TSSAA sport regulations and sport calendars, as well as any guidelines established by your Local Educational Authority. Scrimmages and/or practicing with another team are not allowed. Teams and players must follow local mandates and the rules of the facility regarding social distancing and cleaning protocols. Schools are expected to substantially maintain social distancing between players, coaches and spectators. If a local mandate is absent, schools are encouraged to adopt the Tennessee Guidelines for Non-Contact Sports. There have also been Competition and Rules Modifications to keep students safe during the covid-19 pandemic. The specific rules can be found on the TSSAA website under the Tennessee Returns to play section.
