The Central High School Raiderettes dance team returned home on Thursday, July 18, from the four-day Universal Dance Association Camp at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The team earned several honors over the course of the week at both the team and individual level.
On Monday, July 15, the team began the camp with a fifth-place finish in a "home" pom competition and earned a Blue Superior ribbon for their performance. This was the highest ribbon that could be awarded.
The Raiderettes also earned the spirit stick and were nominated by their fellow campers to receive the Super Spirit Stick on day three.
In addition to receiving a Blue Superior ribbon for their team performance dance, the Raiderettes also recieved the Superior trophy for their individual performances. This qualified them for UDA Nationals in Orlando, Fla and an automatic invitation to perform in the Citrus Bowl.
Senior captain Lizzie Freeze received All-American accolades and qualified to perform in Rome for the city's New Year's Day parade.
"Overall, the team did very well and has shown improvement since last year," Coach Ashley Kraft said. "I am very hopeful and excited about what is to come with this team."
Overall, the team learned three routines at camp, a team performance routine and two individual routines.
This is Kraft's first season as head coach of the Raiderettes. Her background consists of 22 years of dance experience including state titles and national top five awards.
