For the first time in 10 years, the Coffee Middle and Westwood soccer teams met on the field. In the what is now known as the Manchester Cup, the Lady Raiders blew out the Lady Rockets 7-1.
"It was nice to get that going again," said Lady Raider Coach Travis O'Kelly. "I'm hoping it's something we can start every year."
Coffee Middle got on the board early in the first half. Three minutes in, Katie Cotten struck first to put the Lady Raiders up 1-0.
Not long after, Westwood had an own goal off a loose ball to give the Lady Raiders a hand in expanding their lead.
Twenty minutes later, Emma Roton followed up with a goal off an assist from Brittney Spencer. Spencer herself had an unassisted goal three minutes later to give Coffee Middle a 4-0 lead going into the half.
The Lady Raiders continued to run most of the offense in the second with Hannah Creal scoring the team's fifth goal in the 45th minute.
Cotten again found the back of the net for the team's sixth and Ellie Fann followed up with a goal to make it 7-0 game.
Westwood finally answered with a goal of their own in 53 minutes in off of a shot from Princess Penaloza with Adriana Basurto on the assist.
After the final whistle, the girls from both teams joined each other in a line on the field in a show of Manchester solidarity.
"These girls are going to be playing together in high school," Coach O'Kelly said. "They may as well play against each other in middle school."
