Coffee Middle takes top seed in sectionals

Taylor Anthony, shown in action at Warren County, had 10 points in the Area 6 Finals this past weekend. The Coffee County Middle School Lady Red Raiders were set to play Rockvale at the Sectionals last night.

The Coffee County Middle School Red Raiders will be top seed when they play in the TMSSAA Section Tournament at Smyrna after winning the Area 6 Tournament this past weekend.

Their top seed comes after they beat Whitthorne out of Columbia by a count of 48-38.

Their winning margin came after they emerged like a house afire from the locker room following half-time, going on a 13-3 scoring run while forcing numerous Whitthorne turnovers and ruling the glass, both offensive and defensive. The final scoring sheet showed the Red Raiders outrebounded Columbia two-to-one during the tilt while forcing 15 turnovers.

The Raiders were able to exploit their advantage even further in the fourth as they opened up a 16-point lead before their guests added some window dressing at the end.

Ethan Hargrove was the big man on campus for the Raiders, putting up 22 in the win while Brendan Sheppard joined the double-digit club with 10.

The win sets up a showdown between Coffee and Blackman at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Stewart’s Creek Middle School in Smyrna.

The Lady Raiders also advanced to the sectionals but were not able to claim the area title as they fell to White County 41-30 this past weekend.

While competing early, Coffee was soon looking up at the Lady Warriors which built a double digit lead they would never surrender. Olivia Vinson led the way for the Lady Red Raiders with 12 while Taylor Anthony put up 10. Coffee Middle is 19-6 on the season and was scheduled to meet Rockvale in the sectionals Tuesday night.
